The diversity of Chile can be experienced only a few hour’s drive outside of Santiago. On our way towards the coast we had to adapt first to the driving habits of Chileans. In general, we observed that most of the Chilean drivers do not drive in the right lane and pass cars on the left like we do in Germany. Instead, they often block the passing lane and overtake cars in the right lane. We had to be aware of the pedestrians walking on the road, or cyclists that use the highway to get to a destination. However, there is the great possibility to purchase fresh vegetables and fruits at a self made stand on the side of the road. As the saying goes "When in Rome, do as the Romans!"
We arrived after a 4 hour ride to the Surf City, Pichilemu, where we spent our first night. In the morning we went to the beach to check out the waves which are world famous. After 2 hours of surf lessons in very cold water, we had completed our first accomplishments. After a hot tea, we went in the car further down the coast to the south.
Next, we stopped in Vichoquén a cozy place with a small lake. Unfortunately for most tourists, the lake is a bit hidden and can only be reached from the coast by a dirt road. The lake is beautiful and has a small beach which was definitely worth the visit. Kayaks and small boat excursions are for rent at the beach to explore the lake and the region. We relaxed on the beach and enjoyed the sun while watching the locals water skiers and the jet skiing.
In the late afternoon, we went further inland, where we passed through Curicó and ended up in the wine regions of Santa Cruz. This region is the best known among wine connoisseurs, with ideal conditions for Chilean wine production. We stayed in a "Cabaña"(small wooden cabin fully equipped with bathroom and kitchen) for the second night. We enjoy the sunset with a glass of Chilean wine. On Sunday morning we went to a typical wine-growing region approximately a half an hour from Santa Cruz. In a carriage we went over the vineyard and listened to an hour-long explanation of the history of the estate, the Chilean wine production and the typical Chilean wines that are exported all over the world. This was followed by a wine tasting before we made our way back to Santiago (the driver was obviously excluded from the wine tasting).
A trip to the far surroundings of Santiago is highly recommended. Even if you do not have much time to drive far to the south, you can see the difference from the city of Santiago. In the countryside it is a lot calmer and the variety of landscapes is breathtaking! The organization of the car including the pick-up and the return of the car worked perfectly! Therefore, we thank the staff of Chile Inside for organizing everything!
