To reach the remote Baños Colina in Cajón del Maipo we hired a Jeep for the day through Chile Inside. There is no problem getting to San José del Maipo by bus, but to continue exploring the area on the gravel roads, a 4 wheel drive vehicle is necessary.
The trip was a very special experience as well as a mini adventure. After the first half an hour of driving, we reached a little waterfall named Velo de Novia, or “Vail of the Bride”. It’s a miracle how water poured out of the dry stones reflecting the sun to make a rainbow over the pond.
We continued driving along the Rio Maipo, leaving behind the Baños Morales with its 25 degree Celsius water, to follow the road in the direction of the snow covered peaks. After 3 hours of seemingly driving to nowhere, the Baños Colinas suddenly appeared in front of us. We paid the entry fee of $5.000 CLP then spent the afternoon relaxing in the baths as we covered our bodies in the nutrient rich mud and enjoyed the scenery. The experience was worth every penny!
Those who have more time can stay longer in Cajón del Maipo in one of the cabañas. Other excursions like rafting, hiking, and exploring the nature on horseback are widely available. Outdoor lovers will be in paradise without venturing far from the city of Santiago!!
