World of the Lafkenche: Along the “Araucanía Costera”
The little-known Puerto Saavedra is the main town of the coastal zone “Araucanía Costera”. Traces of a seaquake, which washed away parts of the coast in 1960, can still be seen there. South of the black beach of Puerto Saavedra lies the beautiful Lago Budi, whose many fjord-like bays lie between idyllic green rolling hills and peninsulas with extensive wetlands. A special feature of the Lago Budi is that this is Chile’s only saltwater lake. Its waters join the Pacific at Boca Budi. Under these unique conditions, a very special local flora and fauna could develop. For example, the endemic fish “Huaiquil” and elegant black-necked swans live here, along with many other species of birds, making it and particularly exciting place for visitors interested in birdwatching. Numerous islands are located in Lago Budi, the most important of which, Isla Huapi, can be visited by ferry from Puerto Dominguez.
The majority of the population around Lake Budi are Mapuche from the Lafkenche tribe. So, it is the perfect place where, interested visitors can immerse for one or more days in the world and culture of the Mapuche and take home some unique experiences. A ride in the “Wampo”, the typical canoe of the Lafkenche is as unforgettable as the participation in traditional games, which require quite some sporty skills. Long beautiful beaches invite to linger in Porma, Peleco as well as between Puaucho and Puerto Saavedra.
There are quite many options what to do; along the way you will see many signposts with touristic offers. In the southern zone of Lago Budi, in Llaguepulli (between Puerto Domínguez and Hualpin), you can even spend a night in a Ruka, the typical Mapuche house. They are comfortable and have good infrastructure. Of course, don′t miss out on some typical local food, delicious and healthy. Indulge yourself with local delicacies such as huaquil, turkey stew, quinoa and cochayuyo. Your hosts will be happy introduce to you to their world of myths, tell you their story of creation, magical fairy tales and their view of the cosmos, while sitting around a cozy fire.
Along the route, you will find numerous small and picturesque fishing villages between rolling hills, such as Queule, 28. km southwest of Toltén or Nehuentúe, about 27 km west of Carahue. The villagers live of searching for seafood, catching sole, corvina and róbalo, and making irresistible delicacies out of it! Also between Boca Budi and Puerto Saavedra there ist plenty of seafood to be tried, and what could be nicer than enjoying tasty fish and seafood on a picturesque beach?
The area also has a lot to offer for sports enthusiasts during this rental car trip. In the coastal town of Los Pinos for instance, just 2 km from Puerto Saavedra, there are various options for water sports and you can even try fishing in the extensive beach of Puaucho.
Whichever activity you choose, visiting the friendly Lafkenche by rental car will be an unforgettable experience!
