Wine, Pacific Beach, good food, history, relaxation – what more could you ask for from a holiday? This tip for a day trip from Santiago de Chile or Valparaíso offers all this for tourists with a rental car:
First, head with your rental car to the Casablanca Valley, situated between the coastal mountain rango and the Pacific Ocean. The combination of coastal terroir and salty sea air provide the wines from this valley with some very particular features. This, in comnination with very good tourist infrastructure was rewarded in 2013, when the Casablanca Valley was included in the list of „Wine Capitals of the World“. There are many marvellous wineries, here just a few recommendations to choose from:
A tour on Viña Emiliana introduces you to the method of organic wine growing and wine making.
The small and exclusive Viña Bodegas Re delights with an exquisit combination of tradition and modern spirit.
Viña Mar offers a special flair due to its Mediterranean architecture.
After visiting a winery drive westwards, to the picturesque fishing village of Quintay, a perfect spot to eat with a sea view in one of the simple but very good restaurants that offer local fish and seafood delicacies. If you like, you can have some diving lessons in the small bay.
The most interesting thing about Quintay is a simple, yet very interesting museum on the original site of the old Quintay whaling base, which tells the history of local whaling via exposition, videos and pictures. Imagine, what happened here just a few decades ago! Plan 1-1,5 hours for the museum.
The beautiful natural beach “Playa Grande de Quintay” is just the perfect place to let this interesting day fade out. It is beautifully located inmidst of green hills, just behind the next hill, follow the signs. Relax, enjoy and watch the sunset before driving you rental car back to Santiago or Valparaíso.
